What is Acupuncture? Classical Acupuncture is a complete medical system that has diagnosed, healed and prevented disease for some 3,000 years. It is founded on the principle that health depends on the balance of “qi” (pronounced “chee”) in the five elements which comprise all of nature (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). Commonly understood as “life force”, qi flows throughout the five elements of the body within fourteen pathways called meridians. Each meridian supplies qi for specific organs and their functions. Too much, too little, or “stuck” qi will create an imbalance which eventually leads to illness. By addressing the underlying root causes of imbalance, acupuncture assists nature in harmonizing the flow of qi. It can remedy ailments, but more importantly, correct those physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances that cause symptoms to occur. The root cause of a disease is therefore addressed, leading over time to a restoration of health, enhanced immunity and emotional balance. What problems respond to Acupuncture? While acupuncture is often associated with pain relief, people find treatment relieves chronic illnesses such as arthritis and headaches. Those suffering from allergies have benefited from NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique) acupuncture treatments. Some use it as a complementary support for standard medical interventions, chemo or radiation therapy. Others seek treatment to relieve an emotional crisis. Acupuncture is also becoming the preferred choice for facial rejuvenation. The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization list a number of diseases which lend themselves to acupuncture. These include stress, arthritis, menstrual and menopausal disorders, asthma, respiratory disorders, depression, sciatica, back pain, high blood pressure and addictions (including smoking). Do I have to be sick to benefit from Acupuncture? Because of its ability to enhance the immune system, a growing number of people are using treatments as a wellness or preventative care program. Many testify feeling better in a general way and experience an improved quality of life. Does Acupuncture Hurt? The needles used in acupuncture treatment have no resemblance
to hypodermic syringes. Made of the highest quality stainless steel, they
are very slender, barely beyond the thickness of a human hair and are
inserted mostly just beneath the surface of the skin. Sensations which
last only seconds, vary from person to person and have been described
as tingling, aching, warm or heavy.
